Velico Medical, Inc (formerly ZymeQuest, Inc) is the leader in the discovery, development and commercialisation of enzymatic conversion of blood groups A, B and AB red blood cells to group O (ECO) red blood cells. Only group O cells can be safely transfused to anyone regardless of their blood group. The conversion of all A, B and AB blood supplies into type O will reduce shortages of rare blood groups (such as B- and AB-) and eliminate the danger of an accidental transfusion with the wrong blood group. In addition, losses from the disposal of outdated blood will be kept to a minimum.
Velico Medical is also the co-discoverer and co-developer of a revolutionary procedure for the treatment of platelets (thrombocytes) which prolongs their shelf life outside the human body. The two-step procedure should make it possible to store platelets under refrigeration.
Spray Dried Plasma is a newly emerging technology. Plasma must be frozen quickly following collection, resulting in special handling, storage and shipping complexities as well as high costs and the necessity to thaw prior to use. Velico´s method of spray drying plasma produces a stable powder which can be stored and shipped easily and re-constituted easily with sterile water at the point of care.
The company has also developed and built a working prototype of a Blood Component Processor (also known as a High Performance Cell Washer). This revolutionary device fully automates the separation of whole blood into blood components and simultaneously washes red blood cells, offering blood centres significant costs savings, a safer blood supply and improved compliance capabilities.
